Vintage Arakawas Pakala Paniolo Cowboy Plaid Cotton Hawaiian Shirt EC Small/Med. Traditional red and white check 100 percent cotton with welt pocket. the cotton is midweight and sturdy. Sold by the world-known Arakawa's store, opened in 1909 ( see pic), closed in 1995. The tag on this shirt is unusual, it has the star around the "A" just like the old Arakawa sign which is shown in the last photo.Please go by measurements, i cant read the size print on the tag somewhere in the range of small and a small medium.  I am not sure how old this shirt is but that label is rare.
excellent condition no holes or stains. well maintained, no signs of wear.

was woven of heavy duty, cotton twill fabric, yarn-dyed in a plaid design. This sturdy fabric was soon traded between sailors and local Hawaiians, and the

eventually became the standard work

for plantation workers and paniolos cowboys.
The
checkered-patterned cloth has become a staple and historic fabric to the Hawaiian culture. Changing the future of fashion, the palaka shirt became one of the first shirts to be worn untucked during high-fashion times.
since 1909 Arakawa’s in Waipahu would become the best-known palaka-selling store in Oahu ( closed in 1995).
